Household Hassles & Other Stuff

Things have been pretty busy around here lately.  We had a couple plumbing issues (neighbors' tree roots decided to make their way into our main water line), and the tap on the side of the house for the outdoor water/ underground sprinkler hoses also decided to break off.  Ugh.

We were lucky though, as we caught the water line blockage just before it backed up into the laundry room and damaged anything in the basement.  Phew!  If I hadn't gone downstairs to grab bread on Sunday evening, things could have been much, much worse.  We always try to look on the positive side in situations like this, and we both realize how fortunate we are that the events played out as they did, and also that it was on a Sunday evening, and not a Monday morning before work.  The inconvenience and price aside, we felt lucky.

This past weekend, just before the plumbing issues, we were in Saskatoon visiting my mom.  We left town on Saturday morning, stopping for coffees and breakfast before hitting the road.

Subway breakfast subs.
A little autumn spice cookie too:

After spending the day with my mom, we ate dinner at a new restaurant, Number 1 Noodle House.  The menu isn't too big, and if you order off the smaller, stand-up menu, you can get the dishes made with handmade noodles for an extra dollar.

Since we hadn't eaten since our early breakfast, we were quite hungry.  We shared two starters and two mains.  First up was a Chinese pancake stuffed with pulled pork:

Next was fabulous won ton soup:

The main dishes included spicy, chicken-fried, hand-cut noodles:

And five-spice beef slices, knife-cut noodles with soup:

The beef in this broth was incredible; it was so tender and flavourful.  I kept saying it was "buttery", although I know that's a weird way to describe beef.  You'd have to try it to see what I mean.

The hand-cut noodles were so good, and reminiscent of perogy dough.

We really enjoyed this meal, and will definitely be back to this restaurant.

After grabbing breakfast the next morning, we spent the rest of the morning and afternoon with my mom.

Not long after we were home, the issues started ... but thankfully we were in bed by about 11:30 p.m., which isn't too bad, even if it's past our usual weeknight bedtime.

Workday breakfasts last week included cinnamon raisin toast a couple of days:

And a few tropical smoothies:

I made the smoothies with coconut water, strawberries, frozen mango, and 1/2 a banana.  I added a big handful of greens to a couple of my smoothies for an added nutrient punch.

Freezer waffle that we made a while back.
Our dinners last week included a veggie pizza:

Vegetarian stir-fry:

Raw veggies with dip, and prosciutto wrapped asparagus:

And pan-seared salmon with brown rice, and a coconut curry sauce:

How was your weekend?  What did you do?

Sorry to hear about the house issues! Dealing with stuff like that is so annoying. I am glad you caught it before there was even more damage, though. Way to have a positive outlook and think about how it could have been worse!

All of your food from last week looks amazing, especially that meal you had while visiting your mom! Yum! I had the best weekend last weekend as my sister came to visit. We made 3 recipes from the India cookbook you recommended and they were all awesome. I can't wait to make more recipes from it!!
