New(er) Products

I love to find and try new food/drink products, especially when they are supa cool ...

Who doesn't want to eat little Hello Kitty and hair bow shaped noodles!?

I recently came across this AWAKE caffeinated chocolate bar and had to buy it - not for the caffeine, but for the owl of course.  They are now popping up all over gas stations, grocery stores, etc..

I had a square or two, but it wasn't anything special, and I don't see any need for these Jolt-like chocolate bars.  Do we really need more caffeine!?

On the topic of things we may or may not need more of ...

Mixed with a dark, fizzy, caffeinated beverage it tastes just like chocolate cake.  A little sweet for me, but still a fun idea, perhaps for a birthday celebration (adult obviously).

I love Wheat Thins crackers, so I was excited to see that they are now making Sweet Potato crackers

These are pretty good, but I prefer the regular ones.  These have a cinnamony taste, and would be great with a cranberry goat cheese around Christmas time.

I like Nature's Path granola bars, and was pretty pumped to see this new flavour:

Unfortunately they were waaaaaaaaay crumbly.  More crumbly than the other flavours of the same brand.  I probably got more on the floor than I did in my mouth.  I probably won't buy these again.

I don't know if this is a new product or not, but I've never seen them before, and just couldn't resist:

Pop Rocks that turn into gum!?  Say whaaa!?

Have you tried any new products lately?

White Chicken Chili

With the leftover chicken from yesterday's dinner, we whipped up a white chicken chili using this recipe.  We adapted it a little, adding about 2 tsp of chipotle chili powder, using only 1 can of white kidney beans, and not measuring the broth, but just using what looked right.

We realized while cooking the chili that all the ingredients for cornbread were hanging around ... so we baked some of that using this recipe and enjoyed dipping it into the chili.

Have you had/made white chili?

Weekend Things ...

I've been loving sandwiches for breakfast lately.  This one from Friday included turkey, and egg, mayo, greens, tomato, toasted bread, salt and pepper.

This kept me very full until lunch, at which time I went out with some friends from work to Edo Japan.  I tried the chicken yakisoba, but I still think the sukiyaki beef is the best dish on the menu.

When Christopher suggested fish and chips for dinner, I was pretty excited!  I hadn't had fish and chips in ages.  We picked the food up from Union Jacks and took it home.

I was impressed with the service and the fact that they made the onion rings from scratch.  They also have gluten-free onion ring batter for those who don't eat gluten.

To start we shared a Scotch egg.  Mmmmmm!

I ate one piece of fish and some of the fries and rings.

The curry gravy dip was really good.

Yesterday I attended my friend Suzanne's bridal shower and bachelorette party.  In between these two parties, I went back to my pal Tricia's house.  We hadn't eaten much all day so we nibbled on chicken nuggets and fries before heading out for the evening.

Breakfast this morning was the tofu scramble from my last post, and for dinner, Christopher cooked up chicken with veggies/potatoes.

It flew by as usual, but it was a pretty good weekend.

Have you ever had a scotch egg?  Do you like fish and chips?

Vegan Tofu Scramble ... With Bacon.

I've been reading Allysia's blog for a while, and met her for the first time in person this past summer.  She always makes the best vegan breakfasts, and I've been meaning to try one of her breakfast recipes for a while.  Today we randomly decided to make her basic tofu scramble, and luckily had all the ingredients on hand.

On the side ... bacon.  And toast.

We both thought the tofu scramble was really, really, good, and were surprised by how much it tasted like an egg scramble.  Tofu really is a great egg replacement!

You can find the recipe here.  The only change we made was using half of a pepper instead of a whole one, and instead adding some greens (kale, spinach) that were on their last legs.

What did you eat for breakfast this weekend?  How was your weekend?

Whattup Wednesday

1)  I like grapes ... but I loooooove tasty beverages made with grapes.

Thesis writing is more fun with tasty beverages.

2)  We saw Django Unchained on Saturday evening.  If you haven't seen this movie, you should!  It's hilarious!

3)  Months ago when making perogies, Christopher made a giant, calzone-sized perogy.  We cooked it up and ate it on Monday evening.  I learned that the only thing better than a perogy is a jumbo perogy.  We jazzed it up with white onion, green onion, sour cream and hot sauce.

4)  Life can get busy.  I keep track of appointments, events, social engagements, etc., in a paper day-planner.  Yes, even in this technological age, I still use a paper day planner.  I searched for one in January with something very specific in mind ... and I found it.

It makes me happy.  New York, I love you.

5)  I picked up a few groceries after work yesterday and thought I'd try something new for dinner - coconut curry marinated tempeh.  Little did I know that after cooking it up, it would smell and taste like rancid, moldy, shampoo-coated vomit.  Appetizing.  I had no choice but to toss it and start over with dinner.

I do like tempeh, but the sauce on this was horrifying.

6)  While shopping I also picked up this minced coriander (coriander = cilantro; cilantro = love).  It was so good that I used half of the jar on my dinner.  That is not an exaggeration.  Seriously.

7)  My dinner, which tasted much better than the tempeh, was fried tofu seasoned with pepper, salt and Indian spices, rice with peas, and half a jar of minced coriander on top.  It was awesome!

A Very Fowl Dinner

On Sunday evening we went to Christopher's parent's house for a very fowl (though, not foul) dinner.  The delicious meal included turkey, duck l'orange, and fried chicken.  This was served with coleslaw and potato salad.

I don't think I've ever had homemade fried chicken ... at least not since I was a kid.  It was absolutely fantastic, and definitely my favourite part of the meal.  I think Christopher's favourite was the duck.

Do you like fried chicken?  Duck?  Turkey?  What's your favourite type of "fowl"?

Recent Eats

Valentine's eats included ...

Oatmeal with strawberries, coconut, chia seeds and chocolate.
An incredible appetizer from Bombay
Christopher's briyani from Bombay - WOW - soooo good!  I had shahi paneer and saffron rice.
Bombay has the best Indian food I've ever tasted, and possibly the best food in the city.  We've tried about 7 things on the menu now, and each has been out-of-this-world good.  Can't wait to go back again soon and try something else!  If you give it a shot, I highly recommend ordering off of the menu.

On Friday after work we headed to Saskatoon.  We ate dinner in the hotel before going out for the evening with a pal.

On Saturday evening we went out for more Indian food, at Taj Mahal in Saskatoon.

This restaurant has a great reputation, and we were impressed with the excellent service.  The food was pretty good, but it's no Bombay.

What restaurant would you say has the best food in your city?
How has your weekend been?

Diana Krall in concert.

Pretty nice little valentine's if you ask me.

Lately

I ended up finding suitable valentines ... they are scratch and sniff too!

This evening was spent having tea with a girlfriend and then heading to my sister's place for a visit.  Her and her husband bought their first home, and I came to check it out and also to bring my nephew his birthday present.

Their house is really cute

Hey - I have the same couch!
Totally wishing I had room upstairs for one of those fire places - pretty!
While giving me a tour, my sister showed me the perfume that her mother-in-law bought because she saw it and thought of her:

Bahahahaha.  This may or may not be a perfect description of my sister ;-) Hehe - love you sisterface!

Lately
(This meme has been floating around blogland.  I saw it on Amber's blog).

Lately ...

Feeling elated.

Writing the last few pages of my thesis.  The end is near!

Reading fewer magazines than I used to.  I used to read a lot of magazines, but I can't remember the last time I read one.  There are a few subscriptions I don't plan on renewing.  Food Network is still the best.

Listening to Skrillex.  I love this song featuring the remaining members of The Doors.

Eating a lot of seafood, it seems.

Wishing that Netflix Canada would keep up with the times.

Enjoying daydreaming about vacations that are on their way.

Drinking water at work out of my new Hello Kitty water bottle.

Learning to slow down a bit.

Missing a few people ... but I'll see them Sunday!

Thinking that tomorrow is pink/red/white day at work and I forgot until now.  Hmmm, off to search my closet for those colours, which are not very common in my wardrobe.

Using up food out of the fridge freezer.  It's nice not being attacked by food falling out when we open the freezer :-)

What's your life like lately?
