Lucali, Brooklyn

We were in Brooklyn on Saturday and asked a local where the best pizza in NY was.  He answered immediately with Lucali.  He said it was a hole in the wall that only locals know about, with no sign out front.  He also said that it was really difficult to get in and that they sometimes run out of dough!?

We hopped in a cab and headed straight there.  As luck would have it, it was closed.

We decided to give it another shot on Thursday, so we took the subway into Brooklyn, then grabbed a cab to get us to Lucali.  It is difficult to find, as there really is no sign except for a little paper in the window.

They were not open when we arrived around 4:45, but we went inside the unlocked door anyway and asked them to put us on the list.  They took our name and told us to come back at 6:00 SHARP!

We went to a nearby bakery for coffees, and then sent the boys on a beer run.

Lucali is a BYOB restaurant!

We wandered back down to Lucali around 5:55 and there was already a crowd outside waiting to get in.  We were seated first in the quaint, rustic, candle lit eating area.

There are no menus, just a chalk board on the wall with 2 simple options, pizza or calzone.  There is only 1 size of pizza, and it is $24 (8 large pieces).  The only meat topping is pepperoni, and then there is a list of about 8 veggie toppings which vary daily.  All toppings are an additional charge.  There are two sizes of calzones (sm & lg), and the same toppings can be used as fillings for an additional charge.

The four of us shared 2 small calzones to start.  They brought them out with a plate of tomato sauce on the side.

Yummmmmmmmmmmy!

We also shared one pizza, and it definitely hit the spot.

After dinner we weren't quite ready to leave Brooklyn, especially the beautiful Carroll Gardens area ... so we walked down the street to Farmacy for dessert.

We shared a classic chocolate Egg Cream (syrup, milk and soda ... sounds nasty, tastes awesome!):

Then we ate most of the Sundae of Broken Dream.

And our dreams really were broken, as this was our last night in NY :-(

Until next time ...

I'm so jealous. I can't believe you made it to Brooklyn Farmacy. I keep saying I need to go there, but still haven't made it, but as I live in Manhattan I really have no excuse! Brooklyn Farmacy is moving up on my priority list.

Egg Creams are one of lifes great pleasures :)

That pizza looks so good! And why I have I never thought of pretzels and caramel on a sundae? Seems like a perfect combo to me. Glad you had so much fun, and so much delicious food ;)
