Bad News/ Good News

Bad News:

1) Our home was broken into yesterday afternoon.

2) The criminal stole my camera and lenses (among other things).

3) We have to pay a $500 dollar deductible.

Good News:

1) Our alarm kicked in right away and scared off the criminal before he could take too much.  The police officer said that we have the loudest alarm he has ever heard.

2) Our house was not a mess, and the only damage was a broken window and some scratched paint where the glass hit the wall.  Other than that, nothing looked rummaged through or even touched.

3) Nothing irreplaceable was stolen or destroyed.

4) They caught the criminal and he is in jail (he was in violation of his parole, and was not from our area).  He will be charged.

5) The police were able to recover many of the smaller items (not the camera though!).

6) I thought that the thief stole this ring:

But then I found it in an coat pocket :-)

The way I see it, the good outweighs the bad.  We are very lucky and fortunate, and my prayers on the way home yesterday (as I rushed home to see the damage) were answered.  It could have been much worse, and I am thankful for all of the good news we have received in the past 24 hours in regard to this situation.

Life goes on ...

Have you ever experienced a loss due to theft?

Oh my gosh, that sucks... You have a good perspective on it but ugh, what a pain to go through something like this. I have never had a break in but both of my best friends did. They live in completely different cities but it happened to them about 2 months apart. Both of them felt so violated afterwards, I think that was the hardest part...

That stinks! At least you had an alarm!

The only thing we've had is a bike stolen out of our garage - and the same thing, a $500 deductible.

That ring is so pretty!

So sorry to hear this!! I would have been totally freaked out, but I am glad that you guys are ok and not too much was taken!!

SO sorry to hear about that and that your camera wasn't recovered! Our theft story is laughable compared to that. When I was 11 we moved into a new house, our first house, and the first summer we were there someone came down our LONG driveway (seriously the longest one in a 15 block radius, not kidding) and stole over $100 worth of plants and flowers off our porch. My parents never put up hanging baskets again. Oh and? The theft happened in broad daylight on a saturday in our busy little neighborhood and no one noticed anything. Ugh.

Oh my goodness, Jolene! My heart goes out to you! Growing up, our house was broken into 3 times: 1st time it was completely ransacked and EVERYTHING was stolen, 2nd time the (newly installed) alarm scared them off before they had time to steal anything and the 3rd time my poor Mom was home and scared them off again. That's basically why my family moved away from the town where I grew up. My poor parent's just couldn't take it anymore... I don't blame them! I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to deal with someone taking the things you've worked so hard to accumulate. I love that you've focused your attention on the good sides! I hope you're able to put it behind you quickly!!

Wow - scary, sad, but lucky I guess that you weren't home. Makes me want to get an alarm system! Glad they caught him.

Oh my goodness Jolene! I want to give you a big ass hug right now!
stolen articles aside, its scary to have somone break into your home. You must have an excellent police patrol that they caught him and got some of the stuff back!
When i was about twelve, someone stole my parents' car. They hotwired it right in front of our home in the middle of the night. We had a big german shepherd, some watch dog she was! she didnt make a peep. We didnt actaully know it was stolen until the police called us at 6am telling us they found our stolen car! They caught the guys because apparently they stole a bunch of other cars that night. What i still don't understand is why they stole our car!? it was so old and crappy!
Anyhow, glad there is more good news than bad!

Oh my gosh! I am so sorry that happened! At least they already caught him and your safe and a camera can be replaces (still not fun)! Wow though - I'm so impressed by your positive attitude! Oh and I LOVE that ring!

Oh I am SO sorry to hear this. Very scary. My car was stolen 3 weeks ago so I can sort of relate. Makes you really angry and then just sad that there are people like that in the world. Thankfully you guys are ok first and foremost.

OMG I'm so sorry to hear about this break in! I love your positivity though AND the fact that they caught the jerk! That stinks about your camera but it could have been MUCH worse (like you could have been home!!). REally glad you are okay girlie!! I've had my wallet stolen once and it was the WORST feeling. I've been paranoid about my purse every since.

Oh no, Jolene! I'm so sorry. I hope your insurance will cover your camera and lens. I'm glad they caught the guy and could recover some of the items. That's rare.

I hope you have a wonderful job!

Oh my gosh - I'm so sorry that that happened to you, but I'm glad that the damage wasn't so bad. I've never had an experience like that...

I'm so sorry to hear about the break-in. Did you pay extra for the louder alarm? I'm glad he was caught.

I hope you get your camera replaced soon. I also agree that you have an amazing attitude about this.

oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that! You are very fortunate that it was not worse, but I'm so sad that you lost your camera. I would be devistated if I lost my camera and computer most of all.

I have actually been robbed on the streets of NYC with my sister once. He ripped a leather handbag off of her shoulder, and than ran off with it. The purse and maybe $5 were lost, but we got the phone back and they never tried to use any credit cards or try any identity theft.

That's awful! I'm so sorry to hear that your home got broken into! But like you said, it could have been WAY worse. I've never had anything stolen from me or had my home broken into and I'm really hoping it stays that way. Then again, if it absolutely must happen one day then I hope that my experience is similar to yours. ;)

I'm glad he was caught...scum!

my friends just came home from taking their 2 little ones to disneyland and they were robbed of every single thing they had...they even broke their babies piggy banks!!!!

Jolene I am soooo very sorry for your loss, for the violation that you have had to your personal space, and for this awful misfortune!

I am glad he is caught and will be charged and thank god you had an alarm.

This is a lesson that no matter how safe we think we are, things can happen when we least expect them. I am so sorry that this happened to you two..you dont deserve it!

I have been the victim of violent crime before and am all too familiar with home invasions so I feel your pain.

Hugs to you, sweetie!

oh my god, i am so sorry to hear about this. i am very happy that the good definitely outweighed the bad in this situation.. be safe.. i live in nyc where getting robbed is a common occurance.. my cousin and i were robbed on our way to the train station a few years ago right before christmas. we were on our way to work.. he stole my favorite bag which cops later recovered at a construction site in brooklyn, ny.. i had a phone book in the bag so they randomly called my aunt and told her that my bag was recovered. it's such a violating experience, but like you it could have been a lot worse, so for that i was very thankful..
