The NOW Generation. I want it NOW.

A

mber's post this morning caught my interest. She was talking about how she needs to work on her patience, and how when she wants something, she wants it now. This post got me thinking about how we are living in a "Now Generation" (cue the Black Eyed Peas song). Everything seems to be instantly accessible, at our fingertips, day or night. We can book at vacation in 3 minutes without leaving our homes. We can do all of our Christmas shopping with the click of a mouse. Endless information awaits our search. We don't need to be patient anymore.

Young people are building brand new houses, maxing out credit cards, doing and having things in their 20s that their parents waited until middle age to have and do. People don't save up to buy anything anymore ... they just buy it. They go on trips they can't afford, buy huge TVs they don't need, and still long for more.

Although I refuse to go into debt for anything other than a mortgage and car, I do find myself falling into this "now" way of life - mostly when it comes to travel. I want to see the world, and I want to do it now. I don't want to save up, or wait until I am retired ... I want to go everywhere, and do everything NOW!

Also, when I send an email ... I want a response NOW. I check obsessively until my email is replied to. But, hypocritically I get annoyed with people who expect me to get back to their text messages quickly. I don't always carry my phone with me, and I rarely check it. Sorry.

Anyway ... enough of my rant.

What do you think about the whole generation now thing? Do you have trouble waiting for things in life? What is your theory on this?

On to eats.

Last night I enjoyed a grapefruit with a packet of stevia (NuNaturals sample) sprinkled on top:

Breakfast this morning featured 2 organic products:

Oatmeal with APPLE BUTTER and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

I also juiced the following to take with me to work:
- 2 cups honeydew
- 1/2 lime
- 1 apple
- 1 pear

Lunch included my juice:

Leftover soup with sour cream and avocado toppings:

Cheese and an orange:

The bus and taxi services were canceled again today, so I only had 11 out of 26 kids again. It was a pretty slack day for both them and me :-)

The hubby had supper ready when I got home from work today. We had a Dr. Oetker veggie pizza with spinach/ tomato/ pepper/ cheese/ bacon salad topped with lemon, poppy seed dressing:

After dinner the hubby and I went to "Up in the Air" at the theatre. We shared a small popcorn, and I thought the movie was really good!

G'night peeps!

Jolene xoxo

P.S. Taylor from JoyOfFood ... I can't get to your blogposts!!! Help!!!

Well I'm glad my post got you thinking!!

I completely agree it's part of our generation. You're right, people in there 20s seem to have all these wonderful things these days that are parents certainly never had. I mean, in my apartment alone I have TWO laptops, a big screen TV (another regular sized TV, a DSLR, a blackberry an ipod. Oy....

Anyways, that's probably why our economy is down the tubes and Generation Y has so much debt! At least all the fancy things I own are paid for but it is hard when you want something NOW to avoid spending money you don't have on it.

i get you on the email thing-when i'm where i can't get on a computer i realize how much i expect to have it NOW

I can relate. One of the things I had the hardest time dealing with when I first started losing weight was being patient. I wanted to the fat to disappear right away.

Up in the Air was just ok. It kind of dragged towards the end.

That's a really interesting topic. When I have new ideas or start a new project (for example sewing) I want to start immediately. I have the most energy to do challenging things while the idea is fresh and I am highly inspired.
On the meantime I try not to step in this consumerism trap, where you just buy new things, want new things and not even enjoy what you do already have. It's hard work though :-)

Your salad and pizza combo look so fresh!! AHHH I want your camera skills. BTW I loved that movie also. Anyways, I believe EVERYONE acts like they want things NOW. Not just our generation. I deal with 50-80 year olds on a daily basis and they are just as impatient as we are!

I am exactly the same way - I want to travel right now to all the places I've ever wanted to go. I am afraid that if I don't do it when I'm young, have no kids, etc. it will never happen. Why can't we go to Egypt RIGHT NOW?!? I guess I first need a job RIGHT NOW...

I'm such a "now" person that it's insane. I need to learn patience, and lots of it.

I'm totally a Now Generationer, but I've gotten a little better about it in the last year or so.

Your oats look fantastic! I want them NOW ;)

Your food choice are so yummy looking :) I am so bad with the "everything now" way of life. I am the same way with email. Because it is so instant I want the same response.

I totally agree with your "generation now" comments, and I am definitely a part of this trend. Delayed gratification is a think of the past. This trend extends into areas such as medicine, too. Nobody wants to work on becoming healthy - we want a pill that will fix us today so we can continue with our lives tomorrow.

What I find about our parents' generation is that when they left their parent's house, their quality of life and standards increased (especially if they left a rural area). On the other hand, when I left my parent's house, my standards decreased because I had it so good while I was growing up.

I can be patient with people, but I definitely lack patience in myself. I want to accomplish, finish, do, and get everything right now! I think it's definitely a generational thing!

Your pizza just made me drool! So delicious!

ahh totally agree with what you are saying. I find myself wanting things now, now ,NOW and wanting to see the world now...and ya know. not waiting. Never know when life will end (morbid but true)

I couldn't even see joyoffoods blog posts yesterday! Said it was protected and that made me sad. But today I can see her posts! Wahoo. Oh the important things in life :) lol

Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

As far as the "now" generation . . . I think I'm a little better in terms of delayed gratification, but I expect myself to be able to get things done NOW if that makes sense. Part of the growing process, methinks.

Your meals always look SOO yummy!!

And I agree with you on the "i want it now" mantra thing going on. I hate seeing people go into debt because they bought something they can't afford because they "had to have it."

And I do have that mentality sometimes. When I want something really bad... i want it now. I do not want to wait. And i'm so with you on the e-mail and texting!! I will sit and refresh my inbox ten million times lol but I can't stand it when people get mad because i don't instantly respond to a text.

I'm definitely an inpatient person but I always assumed it was my personality, not my generation. This is interesting!
All of your food looks so colorful (and delicious) :)

Ohmigosh. It's true. I'm so absorbed into the NOW generation, too. I blame cell phones and internet. Everything is just so fast, I can't stand waiting for even 5 minutes anymore. That's why I get frustrated with phone calls and public transportation.

I completely agree with the fact that we are a now generation...we can't wait for a thing! Somehow we think we deserve to have everything our parents had to work so hard for...not sure why??

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am from Canada too! I miss Toronto, is that where you are?
