Thursday Things

1)  We were going to go golfing this afternoon; that was until the house got really, really dark, the thunder started to roll, and the downpour began.  I guess it's better now than on Saturday when our friends are getting hitched!  I love weddings!  Have you been to any this summer?

2)  We made a beer butt chicken the other day.  We cooked it for hours on the BBQ on low, with indirect heat.  The skin was super crispy, and the chicken breasts were incredibly moist.

3)  We used the leftover chicken in a curry.

4)  I got to spend the afternoon with this lemon-eating cutie recently:

I know he's my nephew because he loves kimchi.  Not because he's my sister's kid or anything.

5)  We went for lunch to Henry's before heading around the lake.  I had the 1/2 club sandwich and soup combo.  Giovanni only wanted to try my soup if it was spicy.  He's not your average kid.

6)  We took a trip out to Indian Head again this past weekend, so Christopher could help with moving the washer, dryer, stove, etc., into the basement.  He didn't really need a hard hat, but ...

I think he liked wearing it.

7)  There are so many movies in the theatre that we want to see.  Looks like we're going to have a busy movie-going couple of weeks.  Have you seen anything good lately?

8)  Watermelon - it's what's for breakfast.

9)  Dinner last night was grilled salmon with salad.

10)  I just read that there is a 24 hr poutine place in Montreal
Well, we're in trouble.

Thursday Things

1)  When we got home from Saskatoon on Sunday, we had an easy dinner - frozen pizza, salad, and some strawberries for dessert:

2)  Last night we went to see Chef in the theatre.  It was great!

3)  Monday nights dinner was spaghetti with turkey bolognese:

4)  I like tacos.  A lot.

They were Tuesday's dinner.

5)  Tomorrow evening we're going to see some live music, including a rapper that went to the same high school as Christopher and I, Def 3.  So excited!  Other plans for the weekend include helping family paint out in Indian Head.

Thursday Things

1)  Did you know that egg whites take longer to cook than the yolks?  It's true!  When we have scrambled eggs, I always separate the eggs first, and then cook the whites for a bit before adding the yolks.

Check this page for my perfect scrambled egg method.

2)  I have a fool-proof method for separating eggs that my parents taught me as a kid.  I plan on doing a vlog (video blog) post about this in the future.  I never knew that people had trouble separating eggs until I witnessed some very bizarre methods on a cooking show one time.

3)  Homemade fresh rolls before the Screaming Daisies show last night.

4)   The snow is melting!!!!!

We are excited that we can see this:

After the extremely cold winter we just had, BBQing and sitting on the deck sounds utterly glorious.

5)  Sometimes we eat Costco pizza.  Tonight was one of those times.

Thursday Things

1)  Last Friday we went out for dinner for my work Christmas party, and we ate a pretty greasy appetizer platter:

The lobster fritters and taco bites were really good, but the butter chicken poutine wasn't great.

This was way more than an appetizer, and we probably shouldn't have ordered meals as well.  When my beef dip and soup came out I was already pretty full.

The beef dip was also fantastic, but I took most of my meal home, and felt painfully full for the rest of the evening.  I didn't really eat the soup because it was narrrrsty.  This meal was at Birmingham's.

2)  Home Alone is one of my all-time favourite movies.  Sunday was our "Christmasy" day (where we eat snacky foods and watch Christmas movies all day),  and we watched Home Alone 1 and 2, as well as some Christmas TV specials.  We still have a bunch on our list to watch before the 25th.

3)  My dad took Christopher and I out for supper to Red Lobster on Monday.  After the rich dining on Friday, I was not feeling heavy food and stuck to salmon with a baked potato and broccoli.

4)  Speaking of rich dining ... Christopher introduced me to the way he used to eat Pizza Pops as a kid.  He would microwave them, then open them up and put some more cheese inside, then microwave them a little longer.  We just shared this one for lunch a while back:

5)  Dinner today consisted exclusively of raw veggiesI felt the need to share that after posting the photo above, ha ha!  We're Libras ... it's all about balance.

6)  Another dinner from this week was baked tofu and salad:

7)  I'm pretty excited that tomorrow is Friday!  It's my last day of work before Christmas, I get a pay raise tomorrow (I'm on year 9 of an 11 year increment scale at work), and we have a nice little weekend planned.

Thursday Things

1)  Non-organic egg and organic egg ... on a date

We usually buy organic, but aren't about to run to a different store if they are out of organic eggs.  Note the much darker yolk on the organic egg.

2)  I was surprised with a belated birthday gift the other day from my buds Mel & Steve (who also happen to be Christopher's sister-in-law and brother).  These adorable erasers were part of the gift:

3)  This is the Cuban sandwich that I could barely make a dent in at Bushwakker this week.  I'll be back there again next week when we go to see a local band play.

4)  Speaking of local bands ... Christopher's band is playing next Saturday:

Come out on out and meet us .. or if you know us, come say hi!
9:00 at the German Club, $12 at the door - 3 bands.

5)  I made a bunch of cabbage rolls a while back and froze some of them.  I cooked them up in the slow cooker and they were great topped with sour cream and sriracha:

6)  My application for convocation is all filled out ... yay!

7)  A couple weeks ago we were at Dad's Organic Market looking for a vegetarian alternative to bacon.  They didn't have any, but they told us that some vegan coconut "bacon" had come in as a sample for the staff to try.  They had tried very little and told us that we could just take the rest, insisting that we have it for our recipe.

I love local business with great customer service.

This stuff is actually quite good, and tastes very "bacony."

8)  We went to see Carrie in the theatre and both loved it!

When we walked in to the theatre it was empty and we were hoping we'd be the only people in there, but then two teenagers had to come in and be obnoxious.  Luckily they quieted down for the movie.

9)  Yesterday we ate at a new place in town - Coney Island Cafe.  They have a large selection of burgers, fries, poutine, milkshakes, etc..  We shared a pistachio milkshake, the Elvis burger (with PB and bacon), and a calorie-free chili, cheese dog poutine

We were both impressed.  And full.  I'd be scared to see someone eat an entire meal like this on their own!

10)  I liked the poster on the wall in this restaurant:

Who doesn't love Sheldon!?

Thursday Things

1)  Our little trip to Vancouver over the long-weekend was quick, but a lot of fun.  We did a lot of walking and a lot of eating (more about the food to come).

2)  My birthday was on Tuesday, and Christopher's is today (Thursday).  We went out for dinner a couple times this week to celebrate.  And there was bubbly too ...

3)  When we came home from Vancouver we didn't have much for groceries, but we did have a couple steaks in the freezer, and two sweet potatoes.  Bam, supper.

We very, very rarely cook steak, but Christopher still managed to cook it PERFECTLY.

4)  We've been going to the public library on Wednesday evenings to see movies in the film theater.  Yesterday we saw "Taste the Blood of Dracula".  We're looking forward to a couple more coming up next week.

5)  Spoon Me has the worst frozen yogurt ever.  They shouldn't even call it frozen yogurt; it's frozen ice crystals.  Disgusting.

6)  We went to a fundraiser chicken/rib night the other day to help raise money for a friend's brother.  The food was good, especially the Caesar salad.

What are your Thursday things?  How's your week going so far?

Thursday Things

1)  We were at the Asian grocery store on Friday to buy ingredients for our Thai weekend, and we came across this gum

It was good for the first minute or so, and then it just became awful.  It also made my purse smell like stale potatoes and gross basement.

2)  We also came across this soap:

We didn't buy it.

3)  Last nights dinner - tuna casserole!  We love this stuff!

4)  I took my dad out for supper the other night to Slow Food Pub.  We each had pizza and a pint, and both took home leftovers for lunch the next day.

5)  We were having a problem with fruit flies coming into the house through the screen when the window was open.  The Internets told us to put apple cider vinegar in a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap and poke some holes in it.  We made a few of these, and they worked alright, but we discovered an even better method!  If you put a bit of red wine in a bowl, cover it with wrap, and use a toothpick to poke holes all over, you'll catch waaaaaayyy more fruit flies than with cider vinegar!!

Fruit flies are pretty smart ... they know that red wine is where it's at!

6)  New McDonald's menu in Thailand.  Cool!

7)  I came across this Halloween costume the other day and had to hold myself back from buying it ...

8)  Rainy Fall day today ...

9)  This was how part of my weekend was spent:

I haven't seen the Star Wars movies, so Christopher is making me watch them.  We watched Episode 4 on Friday night, but I fell asleep in the last half.  I tried to tell Christopher that I "got the gist of it" and that we should move on to Episode 5, but noooooo, he wouldn't let me get away with that.  We re-watched the second half.

10)  How excited are you for Breaking Bad on Sunday!?
