Five on Friday

1)  This week was a little bit cool outside, so we ate some hearty, warming dinners, like spaghetti and meat sauce.

2)  Oatmeal has been making a reappearance in the morning too.

3)  This weekend we're catching a flight for a little long-weekend getaway.  We're really looking forward to it!  I'm sure you've noticed, but we love getaways, big or small.

4)  We've been watching Shameless.  I had seen the first two seasons, but Christopher hadn't, so we're catching up on those first.  We have all the rest of the seasons on the PVR.  It's so good!

5)  Last night we had a little Korean snack for dinner before heading out to watch our nephew's lacrosse game.  He scored two goals!

He's become quite the little athlete; I'm so proud of him.

Mothers' Weekend

On Friday after work we headed to Saskatoon for the weekend.  We always plan to try new restaurants when we are in town visiting my mom, but we ended up eating at one of our favourites, Seoul, twice.

It is simply addictive.  They liked seeing us back there two days in a row.

We had a nice time visiting with my mom and bringing her new clothes, and all sorts of goodies, including homemade peanut butter cookies.

Lunch on Saturday was at Aroma in our hotel.  We shared the shrimp po boy, and the Montreal smoked meat sandwich.

We didn't order dessert, but our favourite day time server, Kelly brought us some anyway.  She's so sweet!

Breakfast on Sunday was at The Great Canadian Bagel Shop before visiting my mom again, and then hitting the road on our way home.

We stopped at Christopher's parent's house on the way back into town to give his mom some mothers' day gifts.  They had invited us for dinner, which is so nice, seeing as it was mothers' day and they shouldn't have worried about making food for us ... we're going to make it up to Christopher's lovely mother in a couple weeks with a belated mothers' day dinner at our place.

We had a great visit with them, while we enjoyed some snacks ...

Then we continued to catch up over dinner, which included lamb, meatballs, saffron rice, and veggies.

What a gorgeous looking plate of food!  It was delicious!  The lamb was so tender - I love the lamb chops; it's my favourite part of the lamb.

And if that wasn't enough yummy food, there was also a selection of desserts including cookies, a lime dessert cheese-ball, fruit, and strudel with custard - wow!

We're pretty lucky that we got to spend a lot of quality time with our moms on the weekend; it was wonderful.

How was your weekend?  What did you do?  Did you do anything special for mothers' day?

Cinco de Mayo

Our Cinco de Mayo included a LOT of cilantro ...

Even more than what is pictured ...

I just can't live without the stuff.

We had pico de gallo, with some freshly baked corn tortilla chips.

We also BBQd some fish for fish tacos.

It has been so nice out, and we haven't turned on our air conditioning yet, so we really don't want to turn the oven on much ... that being said, we've been BBQing a lot.  We usually sit out in the backyard every day after work, visiting, having a snack, and eventually cooking dinner.  We've been keeping a close eye on the trees in the yard, watching them day by day as they start to bud, and little leaves start to poke out.  The changing of the seasons really is fascinating.

Last night we BBQd burgers, and a bunch of veggies.

Did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

A Perfect Saturday

We had such a great weekend - Saturday especially.  We had no plans for breakfast, but ended up whipping up some fantastic shrimp and grits.  The shrimp was spicy, the grits were cheesy, and we were happy.

A sprinkle of fresh herbs for colour ...

In the afternoon we headed down the street to see one of my elementary school friends get married!  Congratulations Tricia and Lee!

After the ceremony, while the wedding party was doing photos, we went to The Lobby for some drinks/appies.

The reception in the evening was so fun!  The dinner was absolutely delicious - some of the best food I've ever had at a wedding.

Many of our friends from elementary and high school were at the wedding (Christopher and I went to the same school since he was a little cute kindergartner, and I was in grade 2), and some family was there too!

Christopher's sister Victoria, brother-in-law William, and his brother Steve (Melody, Steve's wife, was in the wedding party)

We caught up with old pals, and then danced pretty much non-stop for the rest of the night.

We were still dancing up the front steps when we got home around 1:30 a.m..  Once we get started ... we can't stop.  I love weekends that are as fun and memorable as this past one was.

We wish the happy couple all the best in their future!  Friends' weddings are the best, especially friends you've known for 20 years!

Flip!

Flip is one of the best restaurants in the city.  Everything we've had on the menu has been incredible, and the service is always excellent.  We got a gift certificate to Flip as a wedding gift from my coworkers, and we used it on Friday night.

We started with the veggie poutine.

The olives and pickled hot peppers really added to this fantastic dish.

Christopher ordered the ahi tuna curry, which had crispy tofu and coconut basmati rice along with the curried vegetables.  The tuna was absolutely perfect.

I had a hard time ordering because I am pretty much obsessed with the spaetzle, and never want to order anything but that.  I decided to try something new for a change and ordered the ramen.

The pork belly on top was spot on.  Seriously amazing.  The broth was extremely satisfying, and it was loaded with noodles and veggies, as well as a cured, soft-boiled egg.

We don't usually order dessert, but the butterscotch pana cotta caught our attention.  It wasn't too sweet, which I really enjoyed.

We love Flip, and this was a great start to our fabulous weekend!

How was your weekend?  What did you do?  Did you go to any restaurants this weekend?  If you live in town, have you been to Flip?

Happy Friday!

It's been a week of good eats.  On the weekend we had made some extra waffles, which we then toasted during the week for breakfasts.  We did this with pancakes too.

Lunches were either leftovers, or Asian pork noodles that lasted for about two lunches each.

Some of our dinners with week included mushroom pot pie:

BBQd ribs:

And breakfast for dinner:

The most exciting thing about this week was that it was so beautiful, that we got an early start on our after work backyard time.

This is the best spring ever!

Tonight we're going out on the town, and then tomorrow we have a friend's wedding; it's going to be a wonderful weekend.

What are you up to this weekend?
