Dinner Party - Celebrating Winter Fruits and Vegetables

Last night we had some friends over for dinner.  We tried cooking some things for the first time, and also made some of our old favourites.

We started with crostini and dips, baked fontina, white wine steamed mussels, escargot stuffed mushroom caps, bread and prosecco.  The prosecco was followed with red wine.

This was followed by cauliflower soup and laughter.

The main course was steel head trout, roasted beets and carrots, and Brussels sprouts.  We served this with two types of homemade bread - oatmeal bread and stout bread.

Dessert included an orange creme brulee and pumpkin gingerbread with spiced butter cream.

All in all it was a fantastic evening with friends, and I cannot wait to do it again!!

I realized last night, after my first time cooking mussels, that I am NOT a fan of them. I wanted to try something different, because I am often intimidated to cook seafood.  I have never made lobster or crab, and I am too scared to try!

Do you like mussels?  Have you ever cooked them?
Are you intimidated to make any types of seafood?

orange creme brulee and pumpkin gingerbread with spiced butter cream = WOW to both of those. Would love to know how you made them. They look great.

I have cooked lobster one time at home. It was stressful b/c it's so expensive and I was nervous to mess up $50 worth of lobster in like 3 minutes. I really can't eat seafood anymore due to food allergies but if I could, I 'd just order them out. Honestly one of those foods I'd rather not mess with!

Your desserts look especially delicious....I have still not tried creme brulee! I am also intimidated to cook seafood....looks like you did good with the mussels though!

I actually like cooking mussels but I don't like picking them up from the store- it kinda scares me to have them "live" in the house! :) Looks like a great party!

Oh my gosh! What a party! How long did it take to plan this?

I have never had a mussel...I'm a little scared to try them.

We made the pumpkin gingerbread this weekend too! But with icing sugar sprinkles instead of the buttercream... obviously it was NOT the same!

Cauliflower soup looks so comforting and delicious! Perfect for a snowy day.

Ha ha, the seafood thing reminds me of Julie and Julia which I just finished reading...her lobster-massacring stories were enough to make me glad I'm vegan. :) And is that the pumpkin gingerbread from OSG? I've wanted to make that for ages now, it looks great!

Oh my gosh. You are so talented. I would love to attend a party at your home! You are just the ultimate host!

I love mussels. So much. I don't eat them very often, but when I do, I could eat and eat and eat!

Seafood is easy peasy!! :) Mussels are really good in a red curry sauce with coconut milk!!

Crab is CRAZY easy, just boil for 10 mins in really salted water... Lobster is about the same - but I'm not a fan of Lobster.

Those cheesy mushrooms - I could almost taste the cheese in them! mmm

Jolene, if you visit, I wanna take you to Jitlada, where they do a "green" mussel soup that is SO wonderful your toes will curl!

Btw, everything looks AMZING. I wish I lived closer to you so that I can attend/crash your parties!

I love The Show Cab. Such a good wine!
I just made crab legs for the first time, but that's the only crustacean I've ever cooked at home. I want to experiment more!
