Day in the Life: Saturday

Rise and shine at 6:45 a.m..  We officially rose around 7:30.

We ate a pomegranate, got ready, and were at the farmer's market by 9:00.  We bought some corn-jalapeno bannock, and a miniature lemon loaf.

At 10:00 we met Christopher's parents for brunch at Wild Sage.

We had a lovely time.  Next we played 18 holes at the Lakeview par 3.

I'm just learning, but I did par one hole, and each of my drives landed on the fairway.  Could have been worse!  After golf we picked up iced coffees from the corner coffee shop before heading home.

At home it was snack time!  We ate our snacks while watching taped Jeopardy, and an episode of Madmen.

Christopher has been cleaning up the yard and thatching the lawn over the past couple of weeks, and so all we had to do today was turn on the water and hose down the lawn furniture.  Now we can pretty much coast on into summer.  We'll plant some flowers in a week or so ...

After yard cleanup, it was drum time!!

Then we made up some trail mix for Christopher to take golfing tomorrow, and began prepping for dinner.

More on that in another post ...

Now that dinner is done, it's time to curl up on the couch and watch a movie.  G'night!

How did you spend this lovely Saturday?

Five on Friday

1)  Last week we ate at Sparky's, because we had heard good things about their pizza.

It was pretty good, but not the best I've had.  Dinner was followed by a fun night out at Noise Fest, a first-annual music event in the city.

2)  Breakfast recently was a toasted tomato sandwich for me ... and toast for the boy (almond butter with tomato doesn't go together, but he thinks it does):

3)  We realized last week that it had been a while since we had Korean food.  Eeeeeeep!  We made tteokbokki and bee bim bop immediately.

4)  I'm so happy it's nice enough to BBQ regularly!  We threw a chicken on the grill the other day.  On the side, we had zucchini and potatoes.

5)  I am hooked on Christopher's fabulous, homemade French friesHooked.

He likes making me snacks.  That's A-Okay with me!!

I also love Swiss Chalet's fries, but that's another story.

Ummm, and their chicken.  Hellllllo!!

And let's not get me started on the sauce.  I won't stop.

What are your five on Friday?  What are you up to this weekend?

Char Siu-Style Ribs

We were pretty excited when we found out that the Canadian Living cover recipe for June would be char siu-style ribs

They are inspired by Chinese-style pork char siu, and they are deeeelicious!  They are very easy to make, although with marinating, etc., they should be started a few days in advance.  They are definitely worth the prep time!

The sauce is easy to make (you throw all the ingredients into a blender and it's done), but it packs an incredible flavour punch.  We are huge fans of garlic and ginger, both of which are used generously in this recipe.

We served the ribs with a homemade coleslaw and potato salad.

You can find the recipe here, or on the cover of Canadian Living magazine which hits newsstands today.

Have you had BBQd ribs yet this spring?

Fatburger

Yesterday we visited Fatburger for the first (and last) time.

I ordered the baby burger and kept all the regular toppings, while adding cheddar cheese and mushrooms.  Christopher got the regular burger, kept all the regular toppings, and added pepperjack and mushrooms.  We shared the chili cheese fries.

The burger was below average in taste, and actually quite flavourless, even with the onion and other toppings.  They are quite big, as I couldn't even finish the baby burger; it was closer to other restaurants' regular sized burger.  The fries were ... dull.  The chili on the fries was terrible.  Christopher thought they were "poison" and then proceeded to try and rescue the fries by topping them with this:

Notice the Ricky's bottle covered by by a different label ... weird.  Regardless, the flavour shaker was a mistake.  A big, salty mistake.

We both felt gross after eating this food.  In Christopher's words, he felt like "... a big bag of garbage."

Fatburger, you suck.

Have you ever eaten at Fatburger?  What did you think?

Charity Royale: Casino Regina

On Saturday evening we got dressed in our finest and went out to Charity Royale at The Casino Regina.  My friend Jocelyn is instrumental in this event, as her family's communications company does the event planning for it.  The event is a fundraiser for two programs at the University of Regina, where I have been a student for the past 14 years!

We love getting dressed up, and had a lot of fun doing so ...

I think he's the most handsome boy around ;-)

I had only worn my little black dress once, two years ago, so I figured it was time to bust it out again:

There was a silent auction, a live auction (which was fun), an incredible jazz band, and a lot of spectacular food.

We tried a little bit of everything.

The fried bread was really good:

As was the fried cheese:

Okay, so I like fried things

We had a wonderful evening, and enjoyed catching up with pals.

How was your weekend?  What did you do?
