Hurom Easy Clean Slow Juicer

School is starting up tomorrow, summer is coming to an end, and cooler temperatures are on the way.  I always try to increase my fruit and veggie intake in the Fall, both to keep me energized as I go back to work, and to add extra vitamins to my diet, with hopes of warding off the germs during the upcoming cold and flu season.  One way that I increase my fruit and veggie intake is through juicing.

I have always enjoyed juicing, however, my biggest complaint with it in the past has been how much food seemed to go to waste with a large pulp output, and how much liquid was always still left in the pulp.  Every time I juiced I would comment on how wet the pulp was, and it seemed that so much of our organic fruits and veggies were getting tossed out.  When I had the opportunity to choose a new juicer, the Hurom Easy Clean Slow Juicer caught my eye right away.

This juicer rotates at just 43 revolutions per minute, so it mimics the motion of hand squeezing the fruits and veggies.  There are different strainers that fit easily into the juicer, so the amount of pulp and the consistency can be controlled depending on the ingredients used, and your preference.

Whenever I get a new appliance I like to use it a few times within a couple days, to really get the hang of it, and to feel comfortable and familiar with the parts.  I was instantly impressed with how quiet this juicer is; it makes a really pleasant squeezing sound, and it was neat to watch the juice filling up the chamber.

Our first juice was a bright mixture of orange bell pepper, carrot, grapefruit, and apples from our friends' tree.

We discarded the seeds and chopped everything into chunks before placing them into the juicer.   I was pleased to see that there was much less pulp with this juicer than our old one and that it was bone dry, meaning more of the fiber and nutrients ended up in our glasses.

The clean up is a breeze.  The pieces fit together and come apart really easily, and just need a quick rinse with hot water.  There are no sharp parts and no fine metal filter to clean, which was a nice surprise, as my old metal filter always needed a vigorous scrubbing.

We will definitely get more use out of this juicer than our last, because of the ease of clean up and lack of waste.  If the juicer needs a deeper clean there is a little brush that comes with it, although I don't think this would be needed every time.  It came really clean with a simple hot rinse.

Fresh, cold-pressed juice - the perfect beverage while enjoying a beautiful day on the deck:

As an added bonus, I had never heard of a juicer that could make ice-cream until trying it out with this Hurom juicer.  There is an ice-cream strainer that just slides right into the chamber, and then the ice-cream is extracted from the pulp outlet.

I used six frozen cherries and half a frozen banana for a single serving of all-natural, organic, healthy ice-cream:

Other juice combinations we tried included a cleansing juice with cucumber, apple, and celery:

And lycopene-rich, red juice with strawberries, bell pepper, and apple:

For those who aren't sure what to juice, the Hurom Easy Clean Slow Juicer comes with some recipe ideas.

The Hurom Easy Clean Slow Juicer can also be used to make nut milk, which I am interested in, as the store-bought stuff often contains ingredients I'd rather not consume.

Cacao Tea

After eight glorious weeks off, I am going back to work tomorrow.  I always take two teas with me to work each day - one to drink throughout the morning, and one for the afternoon.  Fortunately, I just found out about Cacao Tea, and I am so excited about it.

Cacao Tea is an all-natural tea, made only from cacao husks (shells) once they are removed from the cacao nibs.  It is completely free of sugar, calories, dairy, gluten, GMOs, and caffeine, but full of mouth-watering chocolate flavour.

The aroma is incredible, and it has a smooth chocolatey flavour with a very slight natural sweetness.  Although it is caffeine-free, it contains theobromine, a natural compound that provides a gentle energy boost, while decreasing blood pressure, and supporting healthy circulation, respiration, digestion, and brain function.

Cacao Tea is ethically-sourced, organically-grown, sustainable, and fair-trade.  It is rich in antioxidants (10 times that of green tea), flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals.  You can read more about the health benefits here and here.  And, check out the FAQ here.

It was very easy to brew; it's just 1-2 tsp per cup of boiling water, and a few minutes of steeping.  The flavour was perfect for someone like me, who finds hot chocolate way too sweet.  This tea is a perfect dessert-like beverage for me, or great as a morning or afternoon pick-me-up.

We often drink green tea for the health benefits, but I think we'll be switching it up for Cacao Tea for the added antioxidants and flavour.

Cacao Tea Co. ships everywhere in the world!  Click here to order some for yourself.  You can find Cacao Tea Co. on social media using @cacaoteaco and  #cacaoteaco.

Picnic with Sabra Hummus

July is National Picnic Month, and since it's been so beautiful, and there has been a lack of mosquitoes, we thought it would be fun to head out to the park for an evening picnic.  We found a perfect spot just a few minutes walk from the house:

Our picnic dinner featured Sabra's Roasted Garlic Hummus.

We are huge garlic fans, so we love the big pile of garlic in the middle.  We also love that the ingredient list is very simple.  We used this hummus as the spread for our veggie sandwiches.

We tossed the hummus into the basket to use as a dip for our farmers' market veggies.

An easy picnic dinner:

We also tried Sabra's Supremely Spicy Hummus this week.

We were BBQing burgers, and used this hummus as a creamy, flavorful burger topping.

It has a mayo-like creaminess with a spicy kick.

For more information about Sabra, go to Sabradips.ca, visit @sabracanada on Twitter or Instagram, or check them out on Facebook.

Have you had a picnic yet this summer?  What do you like to pack in your picnic basket?  Do you like hummus?

Crunchies - Freeze Dried Snacks

I am a firm believer that the healthiest foods are whole foods - one-ingredient, found in nature, unadulterated foods.  When the people from Crunchies offered to send me some of their freeze-dried snacks I was excited to try them, as they contain absolutely nothing other than freeze dried fruit/ veggies.

Nature's candy!  It's obvious by the taste that the fruits and veggies were picked and dried when perfectly ripe

Crunchies are not like dry-heated dehydrated fruits and vegetables; they are freeze-dried, which allows them to retain most of their nutritional value, and increases their shelf life.  They are super crunchy, hence the name, and have a wonderful texture that would be a great addition to yogurt parfaits, cereal, ice-cream, oatmeal, etc., or straight-up as a complete snack.

Crunchies' product line includes freeze-dried mango, beets, strawberries, grapes, raspberries, mixed fruit, strawberry/banana mixture, pineapple, blueberries, and cinnamon apple.  They give you the satisfying crunch of junk food, without the added sugar, fat, artificial flavours, or colours.  These snacks are non-GMO, kosher and halal certified, as well as obviously gluten free, and vegan.  They are available in single-serve bags, or larger resealable pouches.

At only 40 calories per serving, they make a nice, light snack, packed full of nutrients.  They would be perfect for hungry little ones, or to throw in a picnic basket, or back-to-school lunch (although we're not ready to think of that quite yet).

My very hungry, almost-one-year-old niece, would love to get her little paws on these!

This morning I used some of the banana Crunchies to make banana French toast.  I put them in a zipped baggy, and then used a rolling pin to roll them into a powder.

After dipping the French bread in an egg/vanilla/cinnamon mixture, I gave the bread a sprinkle of the crushed banana Crunchies on both sides, and then fried them up on medium heat.

Topped with fresh slices of banana, and with bacon on the side, breakfast was complete.

Now that it's mid-day, the sun is really shining, and it is rippin' hot outside, so I whipped up some strawberry lemonade using the strawberry Crunchies.

I rolled 1/4 cup of the freeze-dried strawberries with a rolling pin, until I had a fine powder.

I then mixed in the juice of two lemons, 1/2 cup of ice, 3/4 cup of water, and 1 tsp of lemon honey that was made locally by a friend of mine (you could also use regular honey, stevia, agave, sugar etc.).

So refreshing and tart!

The powder of the Crunchies blended well into the drink as I sipped it, and it did not have a powdery taste at all.

I'm excited to come up with other ideas for using these delicious Crunchies, and am really looking forward to trying them in a yogurt parfait, which is a perfect summer breakfast.

Until then, I'll be sipping this ...

Have you ever had Crunchies?  What flavour would you reach for?  What are you sippin' on during these hot summer days?

American readers, if these sound like something you'd like, keep an eye out for Crunchies in your local grocery stores, or buy them online here.
