Sunday Brunch

On Sunday morning Christopher's parents had us over for brunch.  It was a lovely day, and we enjoyed sitting outside in their backyard.

We visited over bevvies, while enjoying bagels, with cream cheese and smoked salmon to start.

And a salmon dip on chips:

My mother-in-law baked delicious blueberry muffins:

So pretty, and absolutely scrumptious!

She also made this flawless quiche:

She sent us home with some leftovers of both - lucky us!

We had the muffins and quiche with a variety of fresh fruit on the side to round the meal out.

We rarely eat breakfast outside (other than when camping), so this was such a treat.  I want to make a point of eating outside more often; summer is so short in Saskatchewan, so we might as well make the most of it.

The food was spot-on, as it always is at my in-laws.

The rest of our Sunday was spent running errands, beautifying our yard, and then sitting back and enjoying it while BBQing.

Have you eaten outside yet this year?  Do you ever have breakfast, or even just coffee outside in the morning?

Mosaic: A Festival of Cultures

Over the course of three days, we visited 15 different cultural pavilions that were part of a festival in town called Mosaic.  There were 20 pavilions in total, and the festival ran from Thursday to Saturday.  We met up with friends on Thursday at the Philippine pavilion, where we kicked things off.  Christopher and I shared some spring rolls, a meat skewer, and a doughy dessert on a stick.

We continued to share dishes, and try foods at almost every pavilion we visited.  We always share, because that way we can try many more things.

At the French pavilion we enjoyed poutine:

We had delicious coffee cake, made by our friend Edith's mom, at the Hungarian club:

German schnitzel, spaetzle, and an apple-cabbage-bacon mixture:

Ukrainian perogies:

There are so many Ukrainians in Saskatchewan, it's easy to have two, very busy pavilions for this culture (both Christopher and myself are part Ukrainian).  We visited both, having the perogies at one, and kielbasa at the other, as well as some pickled herring.

We had butter chicken (devoured before I could snap a photo) at one of the Indian pavilions, and samosas at the other one.

Korean eats:

That might have been our favourite dish of the weekend.  The spicy pork was perfection.

Caribbean jerk chicken and rice ... another home run:

Chilean doughnuts:

They were much denser than we were expecting, and very doughy.  Yum!

Austrian food (all sooooo good):

We want to try making spaetzle at home; it is such a delicious comfort food.  The mushroom gravy on top just took it over the edge.  Also, the potato salad at this pavilion is some of the best we've ever had.

Irish curry:

I think the only pavilion we didn't have something to eat at was the Polish.

We met up with our pals all three days, and had a lot of fun with the kids the first two days, and then with just the grown-ups on Saturday.  It was so nice to get together with everyone, and to see a few of the special little ones in our lives 💜

The entertainment at the pavilions was top notch, and we took in a lot of it between eating and visiting.  What a fun weekend!

How was your weekend?  What did you do?

Eats and Things

Breakfasts lately have featured a couple tasty things, such as our beet-horseradish cream cheese, and homemade bagels:

And the little nut butter packets that I picked up in NYC:

Nut butter is a necessity in both oatmeal, and Greek yogurt bowls.

We've also been digging into our first cherries this season.

We roasted a chicken last week and enjoyed that in various forms for a few days of lunch/dinner.

On Friday evening we drove to Saskatoon, and had dinner at our hotel when we arrived.

After breakfast the next morning we went to visit my mom, and spent the day with her.

We had a quick dinner at Lebanese Kitchen, and then snuggled into our hotel room for the evening.

After having the exact same delicious breakfast again on Sunday morning, we were back with my mom for the rest of the day.  We had an easy dinner of perogies and sausage once back home.

On Monday evening we made spaghetti and meatballs.

It was my dad's 76th birthday on Tuesday, so we took him out to Swiss Chalet, where he loves the chicken/rib combo.  I had the quarter-chicken dinner, which is what I always order.

Notice all the butter packets across the table at my dad's spot ... I come by it naturally ;-)

On Wednesday we had pork chops, with brown rice, salad, and a mushroom gravy.

This evening we met up with friends for a fun time at Mosaic: A Festival of Cultures, which we're also hitting up tomorrow and Saturday.  We plan on doing a lot of eating this weekend ...

What have you been cooking lately?
What are you up to this weekend?

Tapas Long Weekend

You might think we ate nothing but beets this past weekend, but aside from breakfast, we actually planned a whole tapas weekend!

We had a lot of fun experimenting with new recipes, and cooking little snacks.  We had a three day weekend, so there was plenty of time to cook and eat, while still doing a lot of relaxing.

On Saturday afternoon we sat outside and enjoyed the spread above.  That evening we went to see Bill Burr's stand-up comedy show, which we thought was just okay.

Sunday's snacks included garlic, parsley mushrooms:

Andalusian almond meatballs (which were excellent):

And radish butter with bread:

We loosely followed the recipes in the links.

On Monday our tapas included grilled eggplant pouches, filled with tomato, basil, and mozzarella:

Crispy, smoky potatoes:

And rosemary beef skewers with a garlic, herb yogurt dip:

A bit of sourdough bread with oil and vinegar too!

Overall, it was a very tasty, and relaxing long weekend.  We were also productive, and got all of our flowers and herbs/veggies planted.

Christopher fixed the lawnmower, which wouldn't start ...

Annnnnd, I made a Saskatoon berry crumble for our desserts.

Was this past weekend a long weekend for you?
How did you spend it?

I know my blogger friend Lisa got married - Congratulations Lisa and Phil!

It's almost the weekend again.  Any big plans?
