Nights on the Town

Last week we had two consecutive weeknights on the town, which is quite a rare occurrence.  On Wednesday evening we ate at Thai Basil.  This restaurant is fantastic!

I especially loved the tofu coconut soup:

We shared the soup to start, and then had chicken green curry, and a noodle dish:

The leftovers were great for lunch the next day.

Thursday evening we headed to Bushwakker for dinner with friends.  Donny tried to eat Christopher's food:

He does things like that.

I ordered the beef dip and salad ... doesn't look like a salad, but I didn't complain (they have yummy fries):

After dinner we watched Donny's band The Fortunate Isles own the stage at The Wolf Rocks competition.

Do you go out much during the week?
What is the last restaurant you ate at?
(Usually our weeknights are spent cooking, eating, and going to sleep early)

Southern Eggs Benedict

Last weekend we ate nothing but southern food, while we celebrated all weekend long.  One of our breakfasts was eggs benedict with a southern twist.  We had never made eggs benedict before this, but we'll be making it again!  Our version, with a cornbread base, is the best we've ever had.

We made buttermilk cornbread using this recipe.  We then cut out two squares and halved them like you would a bun:

We topped this with butcher cut back bacon:

And soft poached eggs:

We then covered this in a southern hollandaise sauce:

Wow.  Perfection.

I'm going to need this breakfast again very soon.

Do you like eggs benedict?
Have you ever had it with a cornbread base?
(If not, you must try it - way better than with an English muffin)

Fried Chicken Sandwiches

Continuing with our southern meals last weekend, we also had fried chicken sandwiches.  We used soft kaiser buns, a Cajun spiced mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato, and fried chicken made using this recipe.

Watch out KFC - you ain't got nothing on us!

Weekend Celebration: Part 2

After visiting NOLA last year, we were hooked on southern BBQ.  Although we couldn't actually use the BBQ due to the snow, we made a southern BBQ-style meal on Saturday

We had ribs, with two different rubs:

Baked beans:

They were easy to make, and really good.  We used this recipe.

We also had KFC style coleslaw, and it turned out exactly like the stuff from KFC - recipe here.

And because that wasn't enough, we also made enough mac and cheese to feed an army.

This meal was so, so good!  We'll be making each of these recipes again at some point - maybe when we can use the actual BBQ for the ribs.

What foods would be in your ideal BBQ meal?

Weekend Celebration: Part 1

We had a wonderful weekend of eating, laughing, and celebrating.  Celebrations don't need to be limited to once or twice a year, or for major things - celebrate the little things!  Our celebrations always consist of really, really good food.

The weekend started with fried chicken and waffles.

Bacon on the side, of course:

After a long, lazy breakfast we played a couple hours of indoor golf, and had a pretty good game!

Our afternoon snack after golf was cheese and crackers.

We had two kinds of blue cheese (those weren't for me), amber ale cheese, old cheddar, & espresso cheese.  We may have had a chocolate or two:

The great food didn't end at breakfast ...

Have you tried chicken and waffles yet?  Get on it!!
This is the chicken recipe we use.

Meals Out

We don't go out to eat twice in one day very often (unless we're out of town), but two meals on Friday were at restaurants.

Lunch was at Bombay:

Their $10.95 lunch special is awesome, but way too big for me.  I brought the leftovers home.

Dinner was out too, at Miso Ya.  We got the all-you-can-eat sushi dinner.

This was a great start to an epic weekend of celebrating.

How was your weekend?

Yellow Pitahaya

We love trying new foods.  The yellow pitahaya is very similar to a dragon fruit (which is a red pitahaya), but is not as pretty, and not as flavourful.

It has a very mild, sweet flavourThe edible seeds give it a pleasing texture, similar to a kiwi.

Have you had a yellow pitahaya?  Which fruits do you buy regularly?
