Getting Around in NY

The best way to see NYC is on foot.  The funny thing is, my feet never seem to get tired when I am wandering around the concrete jungle.  I wore Sketchers wedge sandals the entire time and never experienced sore or tired feet.  I think it is because of the adrenalin I get being in The City.  There is so much to see and do, that the miles walked seemed like mere steps.

Of course stopping for delicious eats every once in a while makes walking even more pleasurable.

We had lunch at a crepe place one day, and I was very impressed with my prosciutto, potato and Gruyere cheese crepe.

We also went back to Pomme Frites, a delicious place for fries that we came across last year.  They have so many dips to choose from.  We chose 6 among the four of us, and then shared them all.

We stopped at Whole Foods where I picked up a Mamma Chia drink.  I LOVED this.

It was full of chia seeds that felt really cool going down.  It was hard not to chew every mouthful.

We also took the subway a lot.  We bought an unlimited pass for the week (which was by far the best deal, especially for how much we used it).  The subway is extremely convenient, easy to use, and not scary at all.  There are even restaurants and shops underground!  The best part is listening to the music of the buskers, and people watching on the trains.  I have discovered that I am better off standing on the train or else I get a bit of motion sickness.  I have become pretty comfortable leaning on a subway pole as it speeds and screeches along, coming to an abrupt, jerky stop.

Taxis are pretty convenient too, and very easy to spot (yellow!).  They are much cheaper than what we pay here at home, although most of the drivers have no idea where any landmarks are.  You cannot give the taxi driver the name of the place you are going to, and you can't just give them the street address either ... you have to tell the driver the closest intersection to your destination.  I prefer the subway to a taxi in pretty much all cases.

We were going to hop on a train to get to Junior's for the famous cheesecake ... but as luck would have it we were closer than we thought and were able to walk a few blocks for this:

My eyes were bigger than my stomach and sweet tooth (as usual), so I had about 2 bites of each of these masterpieces.  I suppose it doesn't help that I downed a slice of pepperoni before breaking these out, and that I had eaten supper a few hours earlier - don't judge ;-).

My tips for getting around NY:

- Bring shoes that you can walk forever in, and then do it.  You will get to know the city intimately.
- Subway trumps taxi.  Buy an unlimited pass, grab a subway map and go for it!  If you get off at the wrong stop, another subway station is only a few steps away.  You can't get lost in Manhattan.

Evenings in NY

Most New Yorkers eat dinner late.  Around 9:00.  For after dinner entertainment the options are endless.  One evening we went to The Comedy Cellar, and another a Broadway show.  We also spent some time listening to live music in pubs.

One evening after a lovely Italian dinner ...

We went to a live music venue called Groove.

This place is known for its R&B, Funk and Soul music.  We heard a bit of each and enjoyed every second of it.  The musicians played some original music and some covers.

They made me want to Groooooooove!  I loved the girl's tattoo in the last picture (of a Phoenix).  If I ever got a tattoo, it would be something like that.

Do you have any tattoos?  What are they of?
Is there a lot to do in your city in the evening?

NY Love.

We are now home from New York and I will be catching up on posts and blog reading!  Also, if you haven't entered my Lemon and Orange Stevia Giveaway you can do so here.  I am extending the giveaway until Tuesday 17th, 2012.

We stayed in the Upper West Side of Manhattan at The Lucerne Hotel.

I was extremely impressed with this hotel.  The rooms and beds are small, which is typical for NY, but the bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in.  The service, location and amenities are also great.  I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

Another place that I will visit again and have frequented each time I have been in NY is Zabar's.  This is the greatest foodie market, grocery store, deli, etc..  We ate a few breakfasts there throughout the week.

The deli across form our hotel also had a good breakfast and a wide selection of food for those on the go.  It would be very easy to live in Manhattan without a kitchen ... unless of course you are like me and looove to cook.

We dragged our friends to Levain Bakery and forced them to try a cookie ...

I ate about 1/2 of this ginormous double chocolate cookie.

Toooooo much sweeeeet, but oohhhh so good!  When I am not in NY I can just make my version of these cookies at home.

As we were wandering the streets of Tribeca one evening we happened upon a group of people smoking pineapple hookah at a table of a restaurant patio.  We got to chatting with them and they told us about a new German bar and bakery that had just opened.  We crossed the street to check it out.

We were instantly impressed with Landbrot.  This is the only place outside of Germany that sells the draft on their menu.  They also bake bread and other goodies fresh every morning and sell those as well.

I tried one of the brews and then we liked the place so much that we came back a couple of nights later and visited with the staff and owner over a pint.  The service was spectacular.

They must have liked us too, because they bought us a round and sent us home with a giant goodie bag of baking.

No complaints here!  Can't wait to go back to Landbrot.  It is a Manhattan gem that is sure to do very, very well.

Do you have any favourite restaurants/bars from your travels?

New York, New York

On Saturday morning, our first full day back in NY, we headed to Nice Matin for breakfast.  I got the berries with yogurt and granola.

After breakfast we headed to Brooklyn to check out R&A Cycles, a bike shop that is supposed to be pretty good.  We got the best service from a guy named Felix.

He even took pictures for us as we posed.

We headed out of the bike shop to find some great Brooklyn pizza for lunch, and came across a box of free knives on the sidewalk ... only in NY.

We ended up at Francesco Pizzaria, which was incredible.

We shared an eggplant calzone to start and then got a large pepperoni, mushroom and basil pizza.

After lunch we came across a really old lady who told us that she walked about 10 blocks to get bread from Mazzola, so we followed her into this place.  We saw pastries with eggs in them, which looked interesting, but we just got coffees.

We headed back into Manhattan for dinner at Bread.

We had Pinkberry for dessert, and then ended the evening at a pub listening to a live band play 90s hip hop.  It was great.

On Easter Sunday we took some photos in the park as we headed to the Easter parade on 5th avenue.

We saw some old friends at the Easter parade, as well as some new faces ...

The dance group that we watched blew our minds.

The evening was spent with Guinness at a Karaoke bar.
