xactly one month from today I will be landing in NEW YORK CITY for the first time! The hubby and I have a week vacation planned, and cannot wait!! If anyone lives there or has been and would like to give some recommendations of must do/ must see/ must eat things we would really appreciate it. The books and websites etc. are extremely overwhelming.
I would really like to eat at an interesting or unique restaurant or street vendor.
Any suggestions?
Last night I was haaaaaaaangry. I had not one, not two, but three snacks! When I am hungry I listen to my hunger cues, and eat. I just try to make healthy choices.
I had 1/2 cup of source vanilla yogurt with a 1/4 cup organic granola and 1 T organic unsweetened coconut:
Some goat cheese and rice crackers:
And a grapefruit with a sprinkle of stevia powder:
Breakfast today was a glo-bar:
(I clearly didn't do a good job of taking my nail polish off).
Mid-morning I had a small chocolate chip, oatmeal cookie with my coffee.
Lunch was an Amy's Burrito:
Some yogurt with granola:
An orange:
And also an unpictured cheese stick.
This evening for dinner I made curried beef with apples and raisins. On the side we had organic veggie samosas with chutney.
This evening I went for a swim. I am just a beginner, so I only swam 300 m (12 lengths @ 25 m each). It is not a lot, but I have issues with swimming with my face in the water, and was having trouble breathing properly while swimming. I hope to work my way up VERY slowly, doing 50 more meters each time I swim.

omg so exciting about NYC! i've only been there once, for 3 days, but i fell in love. good for you for listening to your hunger cues, that is very inspiring! i LOVE swimming! i was a swimmer/water polo player for years, and would have done so in college but bc of my ED i had to quit. lame. trust me, if you keep at it regularly, you will improve sooo quickly! it's a great thing to do for your health :)
NYC!! Woo-hoo!
One thing: DON'T limit yourself to raw and vegan restaurants...that seems to be where all the bloggers go...please no! It's expensive, and come on, NYC is food city, there are so many interesting and awesome places...
I love their gyros from the food carts...and you've got to try an authentic NY bagel...and NY-style pizza, of course! Ippudo is known for their great ramen...Joe's Shanghai has AMAZING xiaolongbaos...hee hee I can go on and on!
I'm not really an NYC expert but my favorite breakfast spot is Sarabeth's Kitchen, they have a few locations in the city. 3 words for you... Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. Yum.
We also had a great & affordable dinner at La Bonne Soupe. Excellent French Onion Soup.
I'm curious about swimming tips too. I'm about ready to take the plunge into triathlons and that involves actually plunging into water.
i've never been to new york! i'm jealous!
i only swim in my parents pool... which is for fun. whenever i try and swim laps it doesn't go so well-i have a short attention span. googles help a lot for me... and focusing on form (basic crawl, getting a good breath in)
Can't wait to read all about your NYC trip! That's definitely high on my list of places as somewhere to visit ONE day!!
Mmm your curried beef dinner looks delicious!
Great job on the swimming! I wish I knew a proper stroke, but I'm really just doing more of an advanced doggy paddle in the pool! Still fun though!
Congrats on swimming! I love swimming so much because I can just lose myself in my thoughts.
Have you tried doing backstroke? That way you can work your arms but your face is out of the water. It can feel less intense than the front crawl.
Breast stroke is also good because you can keep your head out of the water for the most part, too.
Btw, that curried beef looks so good! Do you have a recipe?
Oh you are going to FALL in LOVE with NYC. I have only been there once and am returning in May and I am as jazzed as you. You guys will have tons of time to explore I'm sure so I would say just take in as much as you can - hit up some little hidden restaurants and bars if you stumble upon them - they're gems! I've heard great things about poetry slams and I have been to a cabaret - both uniquely New York!! I can't wait to read all about it!!
Um..I have too many suggestions. email me what you have planned and I'll tell you what I'd add!!! BTW get those cheesy travel books I carried around my "top ten nyc" book cause it had restaurants, landmarks, maps by area! VERY tiny and handy!
beef with apples and raisins sounds great. how did you make it?
congrats to the winner!
I swim but only for fun.
I hate thing touching my face, so I never put my head in the water. Its some weird phobia I have. I love swimming, but I just wont go under. I have before when it is really hot and I am in the river (fresh water makes me feel not so dirty). But keep it up, youll get there!
Good job on the swimming! I am a terrible swimmer, but would like to learn to be better at it.
Love those samosas!
Yay for going to NYC! I'm sure you'll have a blast. I can't wait to hear about it.
Congrats on the swimming progress. I hate water on my face, but I love swimming. I just take a while to get used to being in the pool/sea. Then I'm fine.
I'm excited for your trip!
I love NYC!

Of course there is the Carnegie deli and all the typical places too!
Also, if you want to try a different cuisine, go to Brighton Beach. It's the Russian neighborhood and has tons of Eastern European delis, restaurants, and lots of rude people.
I like to mess around in the pool, but never as a workout. I can't stick with it long enough and I have the same breathing problems as you do. Great job on your swim though!
Mmm samosas...it's been too long...
OOOh yay for NYC! I see that you are a carnivore, so my pops would totally want me to recommend this little Argentinian steakhouse he visits every time he is in the city. It's called ChimiChurri Grill. As for a must-do, I can't pimp the MOMA enough!
Great work on the swim! My advice is to stick with it. You will find your rhythm in no time, and start to be able to swim longer and longer distances :)
I love to swim! But I almost never do because I have to drive to the pool, and back... so it's easier to just go for a run lol :)
As for NYC, there is SO much to do! I would recommend going to see a show, walking in central park... go to a museum... One of my favorite guides is Frommer's day by day guides :)
So exciting about NYC! If you go to the MET, you should eat lunch at Serendipity 3...it's got so much character!
I love all your delicious snacks!
I'm not a swimmer but i'd loooove to try it out!!!
NYC... so jealous!! I LOVE it!! I've been 3 times (we have family who live in Upstate NY). I would love to give you recommendations but I can never remember the names of places. You definitely have to go to China Town. It was super overwhelming to me and very crowded but SO cool. And I also had this amazing piece of cheesecake at a restaurant in Times Square. YUM!!
I was in swimming lessons when I was younger, but forgot most of it, so i can barely swim and i can't float ha. So i dont go in water too much.
Never been to NYC, it'd be super cool though. Especially if your from Sask! haha
I have yet to try a Glo Bar, maybe one day when i have more money.
Like Jessica said, Chinatown is where it's at, both in terms of food and in coolness. Time Square is also a lot of fun at night, although extremely expensive (like 8 dollars for a McDonald's meal).
Pandas don't really swim :).
